Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower Seeds

Sunflowers are an annual plant with a sizeable daisy-like flower face. Our Sunflower seed packets are a random mix of yellow, red, orange, maroon, and white. Sunflowers make excellent cut flowers, and many attract bees, birds, and butterflies. With bright blooms that go all summer, sunflowers are heat-tolerant, and resistant to pests. Harvest the seeds in late summer and fall for a healthy snack, or feed them to the birds! Sunflowers have a reasonably fast-growing flower for its size, most sunflower varieties mature in only 70 to 95 days. The flower heads can reach over 15" in diameter and over 16' tall!

Planting Sunflower Seeds

Sunflowers grow best in locations with direct sunlight (6 to 8 hours per day); they require long, warm summers to flower well.
Choose a location with well-draining soil. The planting spot shouldn’t pool with water after it rains.
It’s best to sow sunflower seeds directly into the garden (or outdoor containers) after the danger of spring frost has passed, anytime after soils have warmed to at least 50°F (10°C).
Sunflowers dislike having their roots disturbed, so we recommend direct sowing instead of transplanting.
Sunflowers should be planted 1 to 1½" deep and about 6" apart.
